SBS has acquired the exclusive Australian broadcasting rights for the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara, Solomon Islands from 19 November to 2 December
SBS and NITV will cover the opening and closing ceremonies and a range of events during the two-week competition.
SBS director of sport Ken Shipp said: “The Pacific Games it is the most significant sporting event on the Oceania calendar, bringing together athletes from all the island’s nations.
“SBS is delighted to be able to present this incredible event to the Australian public. It’s a sporting and cultural celebration like no other and a great addition to the growing catalog of underrepresented sports that SBS is proud to support.”
As Host Broadcaster, Sol2023 will cover all 24 sports and produce a daily schedule of 8-10 hours of coverage. All rights holders will have the freedom to produce their own coverage and use live venue feeds.
Australia has yet to announce which squad it will send, but four years ago in Samoa, Australia’s squad consisted of 42 athletes.
“Have SBS once again on the air Pacific Games in Australia live and free to air is a great opportunity to promote the Solomon Islands in one of the nation’s key tourism markets,” said Peter Stewart, Chief Executive Officer of Solomon Islands 2023.
“The support of this leading Australian broadcaster reaffirms the growing stature of the Pacific Games throughout the region”.
Full broadcast plans will be announced in the coming months.
