John Cleese plans to kill off Sybil Fawlty’s character in the sequel to Fawlty Towers. she is creating with her daughter Camilla.
The new series is set in an exclusive Caribbean boutique hotel run by Basil Fawlty’s daughter.
Explaining that the new character was an illegitimate child, born of Basil’s illicit relationship with a hotel guest, he said The sun: “Sybil dies and Basil goes to see his daughter because it was all part of a naughty affair he once had with a hotel guest.”
The 83-year-old added that the new series will start with an incorrect text message, saying: “The new one begins with Sybil’s death and Basil’s daughter receives a text message from her father saying, ‘Sybil did ‘.
“She replies, ‘Sybil did what?'”
She added: “Basil is about to deliver the eulogy and says Sybil was an absolutely beautiful woman. And then the camera pans out and you see her behind her back has her fingers crossed.
Prunella Scales, who played Sybil in the original series, is now 90 and living with Alzheimer’s.
Connie Booth, who co-created the series, told the press that she “would have appreciated hearing about the project from John rather than reading about it in the papers” and added that from a previous American adaptation (1999’s Payne) had been a failure, she “was surprised another one was being planned.”
