Summer Youth Explore Opportunities
Summer youth workers who are participants to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation’s Summer Youth Employment Program take part in a special three-day academy, which is a product of a partnership between the tribe and the OSU Institute of Technology. This unique relationship has enabled students to combine summer work experience with a sampling of various courses at OSU-IT for more than a decade. The agreement allows the tribe to give students a sample of possible career choices and the institute a chance to showcase its study programs.
Students were able to explore health occupations, engineering technology and precision agriculture. After the students completed the academy they were able to display their skills at the Muscogee (Creek) Nation complex.
Students of the Health Occupations course performed blood pressure checks and demonstrated proper hand washing techniques. Others explained the mechanics of robots they built and showcased their devices.
The JOM Summer Youth Program and the OSU Institute of Technology later presented these 18 participants with awards recognizing their efforts to expand their interests.
“This is a great program. I encourage you to always seek to improve yourselves,” said MCN Chief of Staff, Edwin Marshal. His message to the students also encouraged them to continue to follow their dreams.
